Living in the Shadow frequency means fitting in with those around you and staying in your lane. The suburbs may seem safe, or where you’re “supposed” to live. Each day happens similarly to how it happened the day before, and you know what to expect.
But if you’re living in the Gift of style, the bland life in the suburbs sounds miserable. You’re someone who wants to express yourself and share new, innovative ideas. You’re great at spotting the next big thing, and living a boring life won’t help you find it.
Lessons from Gate 8
When was the last time you said to your kid, “Wow, you did so mediocre on this paper. I’m so proud of you!”
Hopefully, that has never escaped your mouth. Because who wants to live a life of mediocrity? It’s not what we aim for, yet it’s the life most people live. It’s not your fault if you fall into sameness with everyone else, because that’s exactly what the education system has ingrained into you.
The kids who are too much, who ask too many questions, and who haven’t yet learned to trade their originality for social approval are constantly told they need to behave differently. To fit in the box that society has built for them.
So it’s no surprise that when we come out of that system, we play it safe and come up with bland, boring ideas. Or we live a life of going to a job we hate every day for decades because that’s what everyone does. It’s scary to step out of that box, which is why it feels like we have so few options available to us.
When you decide to do something different, like becoming a life coach instead of using your engineering degree that society tells you is useful and important, it can feel like you’re destined to fail. Or that you’re letting society and everyone around you down. If you decide to be an engineer, you’re making your life easier because you don’t need to spend so much energy rebelling against expectations. It makes sense that so many of us choose to play it safe.
But who exactly created these ideas of what is a good life path and what isn’t? When you follow the path expected by society, or your family, you’re agreeing to live your life by the rules that were set out. Do you even agree with those rules?
It goes beyond your life choices, too. Do you always speak about things you truly believe in, or do you also talk about things just so you fit in? Do you hop on the bandwagon of the next cool thing, trying to stay relevant?
The Shadow of Gate 8 is Mediocrity: Being the same as everyone else and no longer trusting your own authentic voice.

If you have Gene Key 8, it won’t feel good to be mediocre.
You need to unlearn what the school system taught you about staying in the box, otherwise you will never find the gifts you’re meant to share with the world. And you need to get strong enough to rebel against society and do things your own way.
Especially in America, we act like we want everyone to have individuality. That we embrace the freedom for everyone to be themselves. But when people visibly live outside social expectations, there is often backlash. We can see this clearly in the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community. Society says, “Be yourself,” but only if that self fits in an acceptable box.
People with Gate 8 have a style and wild air about them. It’s about being unique, finding your own identity, and being yourself in the world without worrying about what others think.

Finding Balance
With Gene Key 8, you have a taste for style and are meant to share it with others. But don’t fall into the trap of becoming another influencer who promotes anything that comes your way. Wait until you’re truly excited by someone or something. That’s when your talents will be noticed.

Never dull yourself to try to fit in. You aren’t meant to fit in, and the things that make you different are what magnetize people to you. The right people will find you when you’re authentic, and you’re not meant to be for everyone. Many people won’t understand your angle, and that’s OK. You are ahead of your time.
Mind - Gate 8 and Focus
The mind tries to keep you safe. When you’re being unique and authentically you, it reminds you that you might as well be fighting a wild tiger. Because what you’re doing goes against the will of society, and so you’d better stop!
One of the most difficult things can be to stop caring what others think, but managing the mind around those thoughts is the only way to live authentically. When we worry about others, we dilute ourselves. We try to make other people happy while being only a part of who we truly are.
So when you hear those thoughts telling you so-and-so isn’t going to like something you’re doing, pause before believing them. And you can always choose a different thought that brings out your true style instead:
- The right people will recognize the real me.
- I’m not here to fit in. I’m here to contribute something only I can offer.
- I release the need to shrink so others feel comfortable.
Don’t believe the mind when it tells you to hide your uniqueness. You’re meant to have a style that is authentically you and to share the ideas of others you resonate with, even if society isn’t ready for them yet.
Body - Gate 8 and Health
When we live from the shadow side of any of the Gene Keys, our frequency is lower. So if you’re living from a place of trying to fit in and make other people happy with your decisions, you will be dulling down your life, your appearance, and also your health.
But if you start living in alignment with who you truly are and release the fear of what others will think, you will become more vibrant both on the outside and on the inside.
And if you happen to want to stay fit by trying something like acrobatics or pole dancing, go for it!
When you live your life authentically, your energy flows more freely, and you feel better in your body.
Spirit - Gate 8 and Your Life Purpose
If you have Gate 8 prominently in your chart, your purpose is to share your authentic self in the world and not worry about the haters that will appear.
You have an authentic voice, and you resonate with others who express themselves freely. Promote those people, and yourself. You’re meant to share what resonates with you in the world.

It is important to feel like others see you for who you are, whether through your art, your words, or your style.
You’re extremely creative, though you may find your creativity comes in waves. Sometimes it’s very strong, while at other times you may be waiting for the creative spark to hit. But no one can deny that you are uniquely you.
If you have Gate 8 but not Gate 1, you have the gift of sharing unique ideas and insights that resonate with you, though you may not always come up with them yourself. When you surround yourself with people who inspire you, you’re great at promoting their ideas and talents.
What is the Difference Between Human Design Gates and Gene Keys?
Human Design gates and Gene Keys come from the same energy and placements in your chart. Human Design focuses on channels and which energy centers are defined or undefined, revealing how our energy flows and how we’re meant to use it.
Gene Keys add a spiritual lesson on top of that. In Gene Keys, we flow from the Shadow to the Siddhi through the Gift. As we evolve as humans, how we portray each Gene Key changes as our frequency changes. Based on the current density of Earth, we’re all more likely to show the Shadow side. And if you’re an enlightened being, you will show the Siddhi. As you move from the Shadow to the Siddhi, you will show the Gift.
