Gate 23 in Human Design and Gene Key 23 represent the energy to simplify complex ideas. While the mind tries to add complexity to every situation, you have the skill to distill a situation to its essence and make it simple. And you communicate your ideas with ease.
I have a very strong mind.
I have ideas about my ideas, about my ideas. When I meditate, I can’t seem to still my mind. And I often see 8 possible outcomes of a situation, depending on how any of the 3 variables turn out.
While the mind's gift is creating complexity, that complexity doesn’t help anyone. While my mind can see all the outcomes, I’d have a hard time explaining that to you in less than 10 minutes.
Usually, the right answers are a lot simpler. Each situation has an essence, and when you can see it, you can communicate in powerful ways that make you seem ahead of your time. And people understand it much more easily, too.
Lessons from Gate 23
Our lives are complex. I’ve sent my dog to a friend’s house for a weekend with a double-sided note explaining what he likes and which treats he gets when. (Because if she got it wrong, he will bark at her until she figures it out.)
Complexity is a truth of modern life. We have busy schedules, nuanced relationships, and even our three day in the office, two day at home work schedules aren’t straightforward. Nothing tends to be simple.
Yet complexity is the Shadow of Gate 23. It arises from our mind trying to control everything - I don’t want my dog to bark at my friend, so I will write out everything he could need. But as we try to control the outcome, we're adding layers of unnecessary complexity on top of everything. Now my friend is confused because she has to find the part in the note about treats. And maybe my dog reacts differently because he’s in a new location, so my note is useless. Each layer of added complexity creates confusion.
Communication
Gate 23 is in the throat, so much of the added complexity and confusion comes out in our language. What you say indirectly relates to your state of consciousness. If you're confused, what you say will confuse others. Or maybe you know exactly how something works in your head, but when you speak it out loud, you jump from part to part and can’t explain it cohesively. The actual translation from your mind to your voice gets jumbled, overcomplicating your ideas.
If you have Gene Key 23, you may find yourself frustrated when speaking. You have complex ideas, especially if you have Gene Key 43 as well, and it can be difficult to simplify them so others can understand. And there may be a couple of reasons you feel misunderstood.
- You share your ideas before someone is ready to hear them. The 23-43 is a projected gate, so act like a projector would and wait to be asked about your ideas.
- You run through your explanation without paying attention to your audience. They may have lost your train of thought 5 minutes ago.
- Your ideas are so new and novel that others aren’t ready to understand. You're ahead of your time.
But all of this stems from the mind's added complexity. If you bypass the mind and speak from your heart, you're much more likely to be understood.
Wisdom from Gate 23
Speaking from the heart works better because there's simplicity there. Plus, you avoid overthinking and can communicate in the moment. When you speak in the moment, you can pivot and adjust based on your audience and how they're responding. You can confidently share your ideas, because you know you’re sharing them with the right people at the right moment.
You also only talk about what's important in the moment. You tell people the one point they're ready for now, and move on to the next when they're ready for that. You know how to communicate clearly.
And it’s important you do, because you have ideas to share. When you’re living from the wisdom of Gate 23, you should be recognized for your ideas and insights. It is your gift. And while others may not understand all of your ideas because you're revolutionary, you can embrace being ahead of your time.
Creating Simplicity
To get to this point, you need to remove the complexity in your life. Slow down and remove the things that aren’t for you. The more you reach for simplicity, the more it will happen for you. You need to focus on the most important things and allow the rest to fall away. Anything that isn’t 100% for you is unnecessary clutter. And the clutter is adding complexity to your thoughts and communication.
As you distill your life down to only the most important things, you’ll become a master of efficiency. You'll find the systems that work for you, and stick with them. You can get more done in one day than others do in a week. And you're also good with money because your life is simple. You don’t need much, so you don’t waste it on things you don’t need.
What is left in your life, when it’s simple, is your essence. You know who you are, and so does everyone around you. The gifts you receive are so “you” because everyone can feel when something resonates with your frequency.
And you become good at finding the essence of others and situations around you. Once you see it, you have to share it. And the way you share it will usually be funny to everyone because you simplified it so easily. It all comes back to communication. When you're living from the Gift of the 23, you will suddenly understand the essence of things around you, which makes you the best communicator.
Finding Balance
We all want to be better communicators, and learning when and how to simplify will help get you there.
Gate 23 is part of a projected channel, which means waiting for an invitation to share will make it land the most powerfully. You don’t need to be constantly communicating. Waiting until someone asks for your opinion, or speaking to those who opted in to listen to what you say, will work best.
Your ideas will be ahead of their time, so your best audience won’t be traditional thinkers. Find the other entrepreneurs, idealists, and cutting-edge thinkers. They're more likely to be your audience. If someone is resisting your brilliant thoughts, they aren’t ready for it, and it says nothing about you. Your ideas are powerful, for the right people.
You may have difficulties describing your brilliant insights when they come. Be prepared for that, because it will happen. But when the time is right, you will find the right words. You may need more time to sit with your ideas and truly understand their essence before communicating them.
Mind - Gate 23 and Focus
The mind adds complexity to everything. If it’s not simple, there are likely many thoughts and ideas adding to the noise.
Complexity makes things difficult, and we need to remember too many things. Find the most important point, the essence of the idea, and stick with that.
Quality is more important than quantity, and it will resonate better with the people who are meant to hear your ideas.
Body - Gate 23 and Health
When you live in the Shadow of complexity, you're not living your essence. You're doing too much, and your mind is running the show. You are using your energy to do things that aren’t necessary or important to you.
But when you live in simplicity and only do the things that are you, you will raise your vibration, and your health will improve.
Focus on how you can make life simpler and come back to the essence of you. When you glow with the truth of who you are, you're vibrant, energetic, and healthy.
Spirit - Gate 23 and Your Life Purpose
If you have Gate 23 prominently in your design, you're meant to share new, cutting-edge ideas simply. When you get the insights, you may need to sit with them before communicating them.
It’s important to distill them down to their essence. And once you have clarity, your purpose is to voice your ideas to the people who are ready for them.
Your voice is meant to share your brilliant, ahead-of-their-time ideas.
Gate 23 and Parenting
Gate 23 makes you a great teacher. You can easily explain the complexity of being human to your children. They will learn complex ideas more quickly with you in their life.
They will also understand the value of simplicity. You may be the parent who goes with the flow and deals with whatever comes up, rather than trying to plan for any negative possibilities. And that makes life more fun!
Your kids will feel like the world makes sense with you around. Their schedules are simple, and you explain things in a way they understand.

Gate 23 is located in the Throat Center. The Throat Center shows how we communicate with others, and, from the perspective of the 23, we communicate complex ideas simply.

Gate 23 is about expressing complex ideas simply, while Gate 43 gives us the brilliant ideas. Together, they form channel 23-43, which is all about generating novel ideas and expressing them in a way others can easily understand.
It’s as though the 43 gives us the message from somewhere beyond us, and the 23 allows us to translate it for everyone living on Earth. While you may want to jump in and share your ideas, it’s a projected channel, so it’s best to wait until the right moment when people are looking for your answers before you share.
If you have Gate 23 but not Gate 43, you're great at simplifying complex ideas for others to understand, but you may not consistently receive insights. Put yourself in groups where ideas are flowing, and you’ll be the one who can take all of the ideas, simplify them to the essence, and communicate them clearly.
What is the Difference Between Human Design Gates and Gene Keys?
Human Design gates and Gene Keys come from the same energy and placements in your chart. Human Design focuses on channels and which energy centers are defined or undefined, revealing how our energy flows and how we’re meant to use it.
Gene Keys add a spiritual lesson on top of that. In Gene Keys, we flow from the Shadow to the Siddhi through the Gift. As we evolve as humans, how we portray each Gene Key changes as our frequency changes. Based on the current density of Earth, we’re all more likely to show the Shadow side. And if you’re an enlightened being, you will show the Siddhi. As you move from the Shadow to the Siddhi, you will show the Gift.
How to Interpret a Gene Key and Human Design Profile
The quickest way to understand what your profile says about you is through a reading. I love to mix astrology, Human Design, and Gene Keys into my readings, which I have found to give the best explanation of a person’s gifts, shadows, and life purpose.
If you’re not ready to do a reading, you can go through the gates of your Human Design profile and understand those energies. Those are the archetypes that are influencing your life. And you’ll likely see them more and more as you learn what is affecting you.
As I’ve realized I need to lead less from my mind and more from my human design authority, life has become much simpler. And while a simple life may not sound exciting, it is a lot more peaceful and relaxed.
When you aren’t running around trying to deal with situations that haven’t even happened yet, you have more time to do the things you love and live the life you actually have. Things become easier.
Focus on what’s in front of you and the simple solution. You may be surprised how much easier life can be.
